R-Wing Starbomber MOC by Roguebantha for an FBTB.net contest Backstory. Kuat of Kuat was a cautious man. Some would say prudent, others would say paranoid. As the head engineer, financier and power behind the biggest shipyard in the galaxy he had to be. Kuat drive yards was his responsibility. One of his many fears was an attack on his shipyards from the very ships he had overseen the construction of; the Emperor was rumored to want nationalization of the shipyards that created his massive triangles of destruction, the Imperial Star Destroyer. And if he wanted it Palpatine would take it. By force. Of course Kuat had his own fleet of Capital ships, and his shipyards bristled with ion cannons and Turbolasers. But it was only a drop in the ocean compared to an Empire. For generations uncounted the planet Kuat had mighty shipyards. It was what they did, who they were. So the explosives fitted throughout the orbiting superstructure were to be used as an absolute last resort. Kuat could not let the shipyard fall in to hands not born of Kuat. But he wanted another, less final last resort. The R-wing was designed to be that. Inspired by noble tales of Rebellion fighter pilots attacking Star Destroyers and coming out on top he set his engineering mind to the task. The R-wing was designed to take on the mighty Star Destroyers in a direct and deadly way. Its narrow profile and jamming equipment let it creep up unnoticed, and moving slowly it could push through capital ship particle shielding. Once through the wings swing up to improve maneuverability and to reveal some ordinance. If the new larger profile meant the ship was picked up on a sensor it needed to be able to defend itself against hull mounted lasers. To this effect a large pop-up ion cannon was installed to incapacitate the guns quickly, also mounted under each wing were three concussion missiles to take out stationary targets. Two nose-mounted lasers were fairly ineffective against such targets but would make harrying starfighters at least think twice. The main offensive weapon was a thermal bomblett dispenser. Flying low over the durasteel plates of its prey, almost scraping the surface, a wheel inside the circular part of the body would spin and deploy a dotted black line of explosives, this could be hundreds of meters long on a successful mission and once clear the pilot would press a big red button. Boom! Over multiple atmospheric containment areas and along hull weak points long gashes would suddenly appear, with luck and judgment a couple of runs could cripple a ship, take out critical systems and leave the stricken craft open to attack by more conventional strikes. If anyone knew the weak points of an Imperial Star Destroyers it was Kuat of Kuat, and if the Empire ever decided to try its hand at shipyard procurement he would be ready.
